How to Make Money in Stocks

A Winning System in Good Times and Bad, Fourth Edition

Framework

1988

A framework for realizing outsized investment returns by identifying exceptional companies. O’Neil’s main point (after analyzing 120+ years of data) is that great returns are the byproduct of being invested in companies whose earnings, stock-price behavior, institutional demand, and overall market environment are all working in their favor. His CAN SLIM framework details how to evaluate this using: Current big or accelerating quarterly earnings and sales per share, Annual earnings increases, Newness (company, products, management, or stock highs), Supply and demand (strong demand reflected in trading volume), Leaders rather than laggards, Institutional sponsorship, and Market direction.

Jermaine's Notes

September 2026

I was skeptical of reading this book for years because of the cheesy title, but it kept coming up in interviews and books by exceptional investors. I also learned that O’Neil founded Investor’s Business Daily, which added to his credibility for me. The CAN SLIM framework is useful and its principles overlap with what other great investors use to find growth companies. Read 2009 paperback fourth edition.
